Sunshine Makes Me Happy: A Memory, a Mood, and a Marker

Sunshine has always felt personal to me. It connects to a memory, a mood, and one of the simplest Happy Cues I know.

Sunshine on My Shoulders, A Personal Reflection

All my life, the song “Sunshine on My Shoulders” by John Denver has had a special place in my heart. Not just because of the music, but because of a memory.

I do not know exactly how old I was, maybe three, four, or five years old, but I remember the story my mom told over and over again. She would say I sang the line “sunshine on my shoulders” and then stretched out the ending with a big smile. That moment made her happy, and because she brought it up for decades, it has made me smile for years too.

But was it just a cute moment, or was it also the sunshine?

Sunshine Changes How I Feel

I have realized over the years that I am deeply influenced by the weather. If it is dark, gloomy, or overcast, I do not want to move. Getting out of bed feels harder. My energy drops.

But give me clear skies and a little warmth, and I feel different. I will go for a walk, ride the bike, run errands with more energy, or simply sit outside and take it in.

Some cues are scientific. Some are emotional. Sunshine feels like both.

The Science of Sunshine and Vitamin D3

Sunshine helps the body produce Vitamin D3, and Vitamin D plays an important role in bone health, immune function, and mood-related processes. That does not mean sunshine is a cure-all, but it does help explain why light can feel so powerful.

In a sunny place like Arizona, it is easy to assume everyone gets enough sunlight. But many people stay indoors because of heat, schedules, skin concerns, or habits. Sunshine is available, but we still have to step outside safely.

How Much Sunshine Is Enough?

The right amount varies by person, skin tone, time of day, age, geography, and health considerations. For many people, even a short amount of safe sun exposure can be helpful. Early mornings and late afternoons are often more comfortable, especially in Arizona.

The goal is not to overdo it. The goal is to notice how light, movement, and time outside affect how you feel.

Sunshine Is a Happy Cue

  • Step outside safely
  • Get a little morning or late-day light
  • Pair sunshine with a walk
  • Notice how your energy changes

Sunshine really does make me happy. Maybe it is the memory. Maybe it is the biology. Maybe it is both.

Sometimes feeling better is as simple as stepping into the light.
